Municipalities and authorities responsible for protecting the environment and protecting our waters need solutions, that help their decision making, with sientifically support systems, that enables responsible decision-making and promotes sustainability.

By integrating our specialized water resources management knowledge with existing partners in economic development, tourism, and transport, we can establish a framework for exploring effective, economically profitable and sustainable ways to restore freshwater ecosystems. For the lighthouse project, demonstration activities in 3 different countries are required. We propose to be one of those demonstration sites at the Szigetköz-Csallóköz international region. We are looking for two international project partners who can lead and coordinate the lighthouse project and suggest additional demonstration sites.
Main results and core outputs
Within the Danube River Basin Lighthouse - Restoration of freshwater ecosystems project, the Szigetköz demonstration project has two focus areas:
Focus Area 1: Decision support system for sustainable water management in the Szigetköz floodplain
Focus Area 2: Decision support models for the development of sustainable municipal water management and innovative blue-green urban infrastructure
The goal of this project is to increase water security in the region, mitigate the effects of climate change via nature-based methods, and lay the foundation for ecosystem reconstruction. The starting point for the project is the hydrological and ecological rehabilitation of the Old Danube and its tributary systems, and the hydrodynamic and environmental modelling studies. Based on these studies, local hydrodynamic, water management and municipal water management system models, including blue-green infrastructure methods will be developed. These studies will provide the basis for risk analysis from natural and human impacts,
Main foreseen activities
Cooperation with comprehensive water policy planning (Municipalities, National Parks, regional utility companies, ÉDUVIZIG) with the following major functions:
1. Irrigation, agricultural water demand
2. Ecological design and monitorin
3. Environmental restoration, and decision support
4. Floodplain forestry, wildlife management
6. Recreation (water sports, water tourism)
Implementation of pilot projects.
Increase public engagement.
Innovative character of the project idea
This is a new innovative and user friendly deccission supporty system, with scientific results.
