CD SKILLS - Mother from Hungary: "A swimming trainer suggested to take my son to a doctor".

20-12-2020

I have a son and a daughter. My son was 11 years old, when his swimming trainer suggested to take him to a doctor. He told me that my boy works well, but still, his muscles don’t grow, and his track results aren’t any better. He did not have any gastrointestinal symptoms. We went to see a paediatric gastroenterologist and very shortly it became clear that my son has celiac disease. We started the gluten free diet and the results were spectacular: in the next two years he gained 15cm, 14kg and won some trophies in swimming competitions!

On family screening my daughter proved also positive: she did not have any symptoms either, just a very slight sideropenia.

As a brother and sister, they always were got along very well, and they are also “sharing” celiac disease experience together in the celiac disease also. We did not ever have any problems with the diet.

Nowadays my children are 16 and 18 years old and are able to manage the gluten free shopping and cooking on their own. Of course I am very proud of them.
