REFOCuS - Announcement - Workshop for project partners on selection of plus trees

15-10-2018

A three-day workshop for project partners is planned to take place in Croatia between 23rd to 25th October, 2018 and will be organised by Croatian Forest Research Institute in Đurđevac. The purpose of the workshop is to establish common criteria and procedures for selecting plus trees. Plus trees are such trees that we assume will be able to provide quality seeds or cuttings (in other words quality forest reproduction material) for future clone production. These trees are selected based on phenotypic characteristic (those that we can observe) and may include criteria such as vitality, forkness, etc. Plus trees will later provide quality reproduction material for production of clones and establishment of clone seed plantations. The purpose of clone seed plantations is raising trees that are able to provide seeds more abundantly and do it more frequently than average trees. It is important that all partners have the same approach to plus tree selection, because after the workshop they have to repeat the selection of plus trees in their respective countries in the area of Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere Reserve. Each country has to select 50 plus trees for each of the top five important riparian tree species. Looking forward!
