25-07-2018

Press Release

The Association of Business Clusters (ABC) presented the DanuBioValNet project to several cluster managers and stakeholders during the workshop in Varna on 6 July 2018. This meeting meant another important step in raising awareness about the prospects and challenges of the bio-based industry in Bulgaria. The Executive Director of the ABC, Svetlin Ranguelov, informed about the project activities, project partners and the need of bolstering bioeconomy and the opportunities that it creates not only for Bulgaria but for the entire Danube Region.

The first batch of information delivered to the participants included the arguments for building and expanding a network of bio-based industry. The bioeconomy addresses the reduction of dependency on fossil resources, which can help to achieve the positive climate change targets. The bio-based eco-innovations can support regional development. And, the coordinated networking of bio-based industry actors can strengthen the economy of the whole Danube Region.

The workshop highlighted the DanuBioValNet pilot value chains (bio-based packaging, eco-construction and phytopharma) and demonstrated the opportunities for cooperation offered by the project. The special attention of the participants was given to the examples of innovative bio-based products, such as molded pulp form made from recycled newsprint, bio-based plastic packaging for food, sheep wool insulation and terrace flooring made from composites of recycled plastics and cellulose from meadow grass components.

The presentation of the successful development of the pilot value chains aimed to motivate the other clusters and SMEs to apply this “bio approach” in the future. The participants were invited to spread the information to their members and partners and to engage in the DanuBioValNet project activities. The workshop was closed with a strong message that we need to develop sustainable bioeconomy structures in the Danube Region.
