DanubeĀ“s Archaeological eLandscapes - The Creative Labs and Hubs as source of inspiration

01-06-2021

Spectacular Action-Drama versus factual science and cultural heritage. Interacting versus observing. Diving into the past with a VR headset versus viewing a 3D model on a mobile phone by scanning a QR code. "Danube's Archaeological eLandscapes" aims to visualise our archaeological knowledge and heritage in a completely new ways, using new technologies.

The Creative Labs and Hubs aim to unite archaeologists, IT experts, exhibition curators and other interested parties in a creative process. In workshops they discuss questions that arise when trying to visualise archaeological landscapes and evaluate the technical possibilities.

While most Creative Labs and Hubs in the partner countries launched online, the National Museum of Slovenia met live for the first time and visited the Pivka Military History Park, which is also an associate partner in the project, with experts from archaeology, new media technology, cultural education and more. Two VR flight simulators, the MiG-21 and the Spitfire, were tested. Following the experience, they visited the archaeological site of Ulaka. Under the impression of the VR experience, the team let their imagination run wild to develop a scenario for the visualisation of history.

And the Arheološki muzej u Zagrebu - AMZ also met with experts in archaeology, technology and museum design, media artists and technicians interested in virtual spaces at Creatives Labs and Hubs.
These teams explored different possibilities and scientific solutions for reconstructing past landscapes from different perspectives and the best technology for their presentation. The output of the hubs will be concrete visualisations of selected archaeological landscapes. These hubs will also be a source of inspiration.

And the last examples are the Creative Lab & Hub number three, hosted by the Archäologiemuseum Graz from Universalmuseum Joanneum, the participants paid a visit to the "A(R)DVENTURE" from the Centre of Science Activities Graz. The visit was more than an excursion: participants experienced what a museum visit is like when you immerse yourself in different worlds with Augmented Reality. After the virtual experiences, the experts shared their experiences and impressions. An important research step: In order to be able to properly plan an exhibition with new technologies, it is essential to gain experience and be inspired.
