SABRINA - SABRINA AND RADAR PROJECTS JOINED FORCES TO SUPPORT #CommitToAct CAMPAIGN

10-11-2020

Approximately 1.35 million people are killed on roads around the world each year. Between 20 and 50 million are left with non-fatal injuries. On the European Union roads, more than 22,700 people lost their lives last year. Among them were more than 2000 cyclists. In the SABRINA (Safer Bicycle Routes in Danube Area) and RADAR (Risk Assessment on Danube Area Roads) project partners’ countries the number of deaths goes up to almost 6000 per year, with about 10 % of those being cyclists (the statistics according to WHO and ITF for Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia).

We are committed to road safety in SABRINA and RADAR projects, therefore we have joined forces and supported the #CommitToAct campaign led by the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety. #CommitToAct builds on the momentum of the new United Nations’ resolution on Improving Global Road Safety adopted in August 2020, which proclaimed the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety with a goal of reducing road traffic deaths and injuries by at least 50 % from 2021 to 2030. Besides, the campaign builds on the hopes of governments and communities to build back better following the Covid-19 pandemic. It calls for local solutions to a global issue.

RADAR project aims to improve the road infrastructure safety in the Danube region by raising capacity and enhancing transnational cooperation for all road users, while the SABRINA project focuses on cyclists. Our goal is to improve conditions for road bicycle infrastructure safety in the region by raising the capacities of all relevant stakeholders to build and improve bicycle infrastructure in a safe and sustainable way. Safe(r) infrastructure can save lives, therefore it is important to know how to improve existing infra- structure or how to build safe infrastructure for all road users from scratch.

There are multiple ways to support the #CommitToAct campaign. Since most of the SABRINA and RADAR project partners’ countries are in lockdown because of the Covid-19, we have joined the campaign on social media.
