JOINTISZA Project E-Newsletter, Issue 1 | July 2017

Welcome to the first official e-newsletter of the JOINTISZA project!

This and subsequent issues will report on achieved results of the JOINTISZA project activities, while also serving as a gateway for learning more about the project.

The Tisza River is the longest tributary of the Danube, as well as the Danube Basin’s largest sub-basin. The region has outstanding natural ecological assets, and it is an important European resource with a significant number of protected areas and national parks. The countries sharing the Tisza River Basin have a long history of cooperation, one result of which was the preparation of the “First Integrated Tisza River Basin Management Plan”. While a good and important start, the plan also showed how much remained to be done to protect this important region from the threats of pollution, floods and droughts. An updated plan is needed to assess the progress made thus far, to evaluate objectives and achievements, and to plan further steps and measures that are needed to achieve good water status for the basin region.

The JOINTISZA project, co-funded by the European Union through the Danube Transnational Programme, combines the joint efforts of 17 partners from all the Tisza Basin countries. With a duration of 2.5 years and a budget of approximately EUR 2.2 million, the project’s activities focus on the interactions of two key aspects of water management — river basin management (RBM) and flood protection — while involving relevant stakeholders who play a pivotal role in the Tisza RBM planning process.

The main output of the JOINTISZA project will be an updated final draft of the Integrated Tisza RBM Plan (ITRBMP), which already includes primary aspects of the EU Floods Directive.

TISZA VOICES: Shared watershed, common action

Five representatives of JOINTISZA partners, one from each country of the Tisza River Basin, shared their thoughts during the project kick-off event on the importance of cooperation and on how to achieve the best results.

"What the JOINTISZA project is doing is combining the river basin management plan with those elements of the flood risk plan that have transboundary effects. It is a pilot for the whole Danube, and then we can see what the project results are and how we can use them” | Anemari Ciurea, National Administration “Romanian “Waters”, International Relations

"What’s really needed now, and the purpose of this project, is to update the river basin management plan. The processes are in place, but we need new data, and we hope that the current cooperation will result later in a smooth, integrated implementation.” | Balázs Horváth, Head of the International Department at the General Directorate of Water Management of Hungary (OVF)

"Serbia is the most downstream country in the Tisza River Basin, so for us this type of cooperation is important because all the adverse effects from upstream countries, such as pollution and overuse, affect our water management capabilities at the national level.” | Branislava Matic, Jaroslav Cerni Institute for the Development of Water Resources

“If the management plan will establish and implement the programme of measures it could have positive effects on the aquatic environment, which is a main goal.” | Jarmila Makovinska, Water Research Institute, Slovak National Water Reference Laboratory

"We hope to be an integral part of the process, not merely an external member of the Tisza Basin with limited capacities, and to really contribute and be able to share in responsibilities.” | Olena Marushevska, Blue Rivers Environmental Consulting
