    Needs and challenges
(Needs, main problems or challenges to be addressed)

Danube River is an economic, social and cultural artery of the European Union, and extreme flooding along its course
is a foremost natural hazard affecting both the economy and population. What are the climatic conditions that promote
    the occurrence of

    Objectives
(main and specific objectives to be achieved)

Develop new datasets for timing, frequency, and magnitude of Danube floods over the 2000 years (the Common Era)
using the sedimentary archives deposited in floodplain lakes. These data will inform a series of data-model comparison
    experiments to evaluat

    Main results and core outputs

    1. Sedimentary flood chronologies, frequencies and magnitudes over the Common Era; 2. Reassessed recurrence
intervals for flood events using reconstructed and instrumental discharge data; 3. Assessed roles of natural modes of
    past climate variability in

    Main foreseen activities

    1. mapping of lakes and paleolakes suitable for paleoflood reconstructions; 2. geophysical survey of lakes suitable for
paleoflood reconstructions; 3. coring and drilling of lakes selected for paleoflood reconstructions based on mapping and
    geophysical

Innovative character of the project idea

Extending the flood record before the instrumental era is therefore a key need for assessing flood risks.
The extended flood time series will be open source and freely available for hydraulic and hydrological modeling for the management of ecological rec
