Needs and challenges
(Needs, main problems or challenges to be addressed)Stopover sites - wetlands are crucial for species that have to cross large distances every year. The selected migratory wetlands, after improving their condition, will be even more important stopovers where migrating birds rest and refuel before undertaking the next part of their journey. The wetlands and the surrounding areas are facing threats related to agriculture, transportation, hunting, illegal logging and extensive fishing.
In the face of such a diverse array of threats, the conservation of migratory birds depends on international collaboration and a coordinated response along their flyways. Through the designation of several, important resting points and implementing restoration measures EU FLYWAY SUPPORT will improve the ecological condition of the wetlands (network of critical sites for migrants), the effective management of which will go a long way to securing the future of migratory birds.
Objectives
(main and specific objectives to be achieved)Тo establish cooperation among EU countries in support of important wetlands, especially of transnational relevance along one of the Palaearctic-African bird flyways, namely in Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine.
Main results and core outputs
EU FLYWAY SUPPORT will improve the ecological condition of the wetlands (network of critical sites for migrants), the effective management of which will go a long way to securing the future of migratory birds. The selected migratory wetlands, after the implementation of three pilot actions, will be even more important stopovers where migrating birds rest and refuel before undertaking the next part of their journey.
Main foreseen activities
1. Development of Integrated management plan of the target wetlands
2. Development of innovative tools (e.g. financing schemes, ICT tool, e-platform) for supporting implementation of the management plan of the wetlands
