    Needs and challenges
(Needs, main problems or challenges to be addressed)

Many heritage sites in the Danube area are not exploited as motors for local cohesion and economy. Many are underutilised and lack means for maintenance and investments for exploitation. These issues often root in a lack of awareness and local connections to the sites. On the other hand, sites in a more advanced state of development or sites dealing with large flows of tourism often lack the right tools and strategies to have a sustainable and durable effect on local citizens and regional economies.

    Objectives
(main and specific objectives to be achieved)

DH INC aims to develop, test and improve open and inclusive management models for heritage sites in the Danube area in order to increase their impact on local economy.
    1. Stimulate local economy and social cohesion: by employing inclusive management and development models to valorise local heritage sites in the Danube area
    2. Tools: Develop replicable tools to support institutional and local know-how (lessons learned) on inclusive management models for heritage adaptive reuse and exploitation
    3. Policies: Improve policies in partner regions to better support inclusive heritage management models

Innovative character of the project idea

DH INC will be the first project in the Danube area that will promote inclusive, locally rooted business models for heritage valorization, regarding heritage redevelopment not as a sector or factor, but truly as a vector for local development processes. DH INC builds further upon the running EU Horizon 2020 RIA project ‘OpenHeritage’ where open and inclusive models for marginalised heritage sites are developed and tested in 6 heritage labs. In DH INC the ideas and insights developed under ‘OpenHeritage’ will be employed in de Danube area. Many characteristics in the Danube area deserve a more explicit and custom-made approach, e.g. monofunctional areas, lack of connectivity, different economic models and financing sources. Off course there are still many difference within the Danube area, but overall the current state and underexploitaion of heritage deserves a more locally rooted, Danube specific approach.
