    Needs and challenges
(Needs, main problems or challenges to be addressed)

Water management and water resources efficiency are fundamental for achieving sustainable development. Wastewater treatment is a necessity to keep the Danube and its tributaries clean. Efficient sludge management is linked up as a part of proper wastewater treatment process. Once, when it will not be possible to landfill the sludge anymore in conventional manners, there will be a need for a change to manage it differently – in accordance to EU Water Framework Directive. Sludge contains phosphorus (the world is in short of this element), nitrogen compounds and it is also rich in organic content, therefore, it has a great potential to be reused for agricultural, energy and even animal feed production purposes. To face future changes in sludge management legislation and to meet sustainable development goals to manage sludge, from different sources such as industrial, municipal wwtp, sediments from rivers and agricultural retention tanks and as a resource it is necessary to adopt a national/regional strategies.

    Objectives
(main and specific objectives to be achieved)

The main objective is the development of feasible, sustainable and innovative guidelines for sludge upcycling and reuse in the Danube region (EU new member states and candidates such as CZE, SVK, CRO, SRB, ROM, BLG) by application of the holistic approach.

    Main results and core outputs

Interactive Guide with an integrated approach of the potential sludge upcycling on the Danube regionals levels.
The Guide will support the development and improvement of the existing wastewater/sludge management programs, provide a baseline for legislation changes and improvement, and prepare all relevant stakeholders for the implementation of those changes.

    Main foreseen activities

    1. Discussion and cooperation with governmental sectors, specified and integrated assessment of the existing situation and its categorizing.
    2. Innovative strategies implementing into an interactive guideline (an outcome of the guideline web Good Practices, Case Studies, Measures with an existing example).
    3. Support for the creation of networks and platform for cooperation on strategies' implementation for all the stakeholders: networking university, research and private sectors as well as other institutions with different legal status.

Innovative character of the project idea

Interactive tool with focus on the future legislation changes and sustainable development within wastewater/sludge management in the Danube regions.
