Needs and challenges
(Needs, main problems or challenges to be addressed)1.1. Outdated district heating network which results in a great number of pipeline cracks during heating season. Cracks usually occur during the period of lowest temperatures when the system load is at its maximum. Sometimes it takes a few days to locate the exact place of a pipeline crack which causes the loss of a great amount of hot water which conequenty results in heat loss. Heat is also lost during pipeline sanation because it is neccessary to release great amounts of water out of the system in order to start the welding of pipes.
1.2. Substantial network heat losses resulting from damaged thermo insulation of the pipeline (mineral wool or PUR foam)
1.3. Insufficient capacity of the existing heating network for further expansion of district heating system. The existing district heating system was designed in the 80s of the last century according to the then population. In the meantime the heat consumation has increased considerably and it requires a heating network with bigger capacity.
Objectives
(main and specific objectives to be achieved)The main goal of the „Reconstruction of the backbone district heat supply and the expansion of district heating system through the suburban areas“ project is the preservation of the environment.
Specific goals:
- Reconstruction of the backbone district heat supply network from the heat takeover point (Hrasno Coal Depot) to all substations in the town.
- Decreaseing system heat loss
- Creating conditions for the expansion of district heating to Povezice suburb
- Shutting down about 400 individual solid fuels boiler-rooms in Povezice suburbs.
Main results and core outputs
3.1. Reconstructed district heating network
3.2. Decreased system heat loss;
3.3. District heating system expanded to the suburbs
3.4. 400 individual solid fuels boiler-rooms shut down in Povezice suburb. Estimated avoided emissions: SO2 – 92t, NOx – 6t, CO – 186t i PM10 – 21t
Main foreseen activities
4.1. Project documentation preparation
4.2. The tender procedure for selecting the best bidder for the execution of works
4.3. Signing the contract with a contractor
4.4. Executing heating system reconstruction works (replacement of outdated pipes with larger diameter pipes to provide conditions for expanding district heating network)
4.5. Expanding district heating system to Povezice suburb
4.6. Project implementation monitoring
4.7. Evaluating the project by measuring ground-level concentrations of pollutants in Povezice suburb and by collating the data with the data prior to the project implementation. Recording the number of ceacks and damages on the reconstructed heating system and collating the data with the data prior to the reconstruction
Innovative character of the project idea
Our priority is to reconstruct the existing 11-km heating system link which enables normal functioning of the existing district heating system and to establish conditions for a significant expansion of the district heating network in the Municipality of Kakanj. This implementation would decrease the number of individual boiler-rooms and subsequently the emission of harmful gases.
New pipeline should have reinforced thermal insulation to further decrease heat loss.
