Project idea information
Priority
Environment and culture responsible Danube region - Strengthen transnational water management and flood risk prevention
Project Idea Promoter
(name of the institution)National Institute of Chemistry
Needs and challenges
(Needs, main problems or challenges to be addressed)The few studies conducted on microplastics pollution in the Danube have shown a high burden, however no concerted regional action has been undertaken to establish a regional capacity to deal with this novel type of pollution , identify and quantify main sources, and start development of mitigation actions.
Objectives
(main and specific objectives to be achieved)The main objective is to address micro plastics pollution in the Danube basin with a goal to reduce this type of pollution., To achieve this goal a map of plastics pollution in the Danube region will be established, key sources will be identified, and measures to reduce micoplastics from entering the waterways will be developed through pilot actions. A regional community will be established in all partner countries for monitoring microplastics pollution, the policy level will be targeted to support continued action and professional and general public will be targeted to reach positive change.
Main results and core outputs
The project will provide currently unavailable geographically specific quantitative information on microplastics pollution and key sources. A harmonized regional technical/scientific capacity will be established. Awareness among political decision makers and, industries with pollution potential and other stakeholders will be raised. Mitigation pilot projects will be carried out.
Main foreseen activities
Harmonization of procedures for monitoring MP pollution and monitoring in Danube as well as main tributaries. Identification and engagement of stakeholders that can play a role in development and implementation of mitigation actions. Development and implementation of practical demonstration pilot projects targeting MP pollution reduction. Awareness raising at national and local policy level, industry, NGOs, and general public.
Innovative character of the project idea
The main innovation of the project is to address the shared regional challenge through a harmonized and coordinated regional action.
