    Needs and challenges
(Needs, main problems or challenges to be addressed)

The Danube River Basin, which includes 14 countries (9 EU and 5 non-EU) and together with its mountain ranges and numerous protected areas; faces many environmental challenges that characterize a globalized society. This society is unique in the way that it can become a laboratory and observatory for pilot projects useful for the entire region and the EU as a whole. The most pressing challenges for the sustainable development of the DTP area result from pollution, from alterations of the natural cycles and from invasive species that have not previously inhabited the area. By analyzing the S3 in the DTP area, there are 9 countries which adopted the S3 in their regions (NUTS 2). Seven out of nine countries recognized Energy and sustainable environment as one of the key areas for development. Transition to the sustainable environment and optimal energy usage needs robust knowledge with strong cooperative structures that will together implement the much-needed changes.

    Objectives
(main and specific objectives to be achieved)

    I. Developing a digital platform for the exchange of innovative solutions in the areas of energy and sustainable environment
SO1 - mapping all of the stakeholders with an emphasis on the supporting institutions (intermediate bodies & NGOs) and SMEs
SO2 - strategic analysis and evaluation of competitiveness of DTP area energy and environment clusters within global value chains
SO3 - establishment of an informal cooperation organization – Danube energy and sustainable environment cluster (DESEC)
II. Detecting and development of at least 2 pilot projects based on the innovative solutions in the areas of energy and sustainable environment (Key Enabling Technologies, green technology and ICT solutions)
III. Organized triple-helix collaboration platform - organizing various cooperation events (roundtables, panels, conference) for the exchange of good practices between the different stakeholders (triple-helix)

    Main results and core outputs

    • Established digital platform with the results of the mapping (who is who) of the Energy and sustainable environment area
    • Development of at least 2 collaborative pilot projects
    • Established „Danube energy and sustainable environment cluster (DESEC)“ - informal cooperation organization
    • Organized cooperation events

    Main foreseen activities

    • Mapping all of the stakeholders in the areas of energy and sustainable environment with an emphasis on the supporting institutions and SMEs which are providing innovative solutions
    • Strategic analysis and evaluation of competitiveness of DTP area energy and environment clusters within global value chains, identification of needed activities for improving the position of related products and services within global value chains and strategic segments for industry upgrade
    • Creation of the digital platform comprising the results of the mapping process (SMEs - location, products, services, supporting institutions and research institutions)
    • Establishment of an informal cooperation organization – Danube energy and sustainable environment cluster (DESEC)
    • Development of at least 2 collaborative pilot projects based on the deployment of Key Enabling Technologies, Green technologies and ICT solutions in the areas of energy and sustainable environment
    • Organization of various cooperation events

Innovative character of the project idea

The creation of the digital database comprised of main actors in the DTP area that will be the first of its kind and will further enable new possibilities of co-creation in the area of the energy and sustainable environment. Additionally, this process will bring forth better understanding of the Danube value chain in the Energy and sustainable environment area and will help with further development of collaborative projects in the Danube region (transnational network). By recognizing the mutual area in the S3, this project will develop a joint smart specialization approach that will boost the cluster cooperation in the specified area.
