    Needs and challenges
(Needs, main problems or challenges to be addressed)

SMEs may be negatively affected by the challenges related to Industry 4.0 and the changeover towards digital production in networked factories. There is a significant risk for SMEs to miss business opportunity, if they are not able to participate in research results and new technological solutions. Analysis in Danube region shows that the main issue in adapting to Industry 4.0 challenges is the lack of knowledge and competences among employees (managers as well as workers) from who is required a significant paradigm shift and also weak public support for the SMEs concerning challenges related to Industry 4.0 and the changeover towards digital production in networked factories. Generally there is low awareness of Industry 4.0 outside of key stakeholders and mainly there are missing good practices that could be followed.

On policy level (national, regional), there are gaps in regional education ecosystems addressing skills and competences of SMEs employees.
